Two great looking burger joints have come to my attention via Twitter this week. Being an avid follower of restaurant design trends and concepts, I typically slant my head towards the high end of the industry to catch a glimpse of where things are heading. However, lately - right under our noses - there have been some great changes in other places. Places where design and great food don't always meet.
The first one I noticed was Larkburger. Larkburger isn't well known (yet) outside of Colorado, but it will be. The Burgers look fantastic and their food philosophy's focus is on fresh and sustainable. The decor is sleek and clean and made from reclaimed timber. The whole thing lives and breathes freshness.
My favorite chef, from TOP CHEF was Richard Blais. His blend of fun and molecular gastronomy was unique amongst his competitors. His newest creation is Flip Burger. It is, as they say on their site, "fine dining between two buns". The design itself was created by ai3 inc. in Atlanta, GA. Its decor is modern, but, "like the menu, doesn't take it self too seriously".
UPDATE (07-15-09): Since writing this blog, I have been alerted to another great, well-designed burger spot located in California, Burger Lounge. Using organically raised, Tallgrass beef and a killer design, this spot in a must see if you are in the San Diego area. 4 Locations to choose from.
The demand for good design has moved from Vegas and NY straight to the hearts and minds of all of us. Why can't we have great food in a great burger joint with an atmosphere that inspires us? Now we can.
Update: Please submit your favorites and we can create a memorial to all the great burger spots out there!
